Boron nitride (BN) exists in three crystalline forms: hexagonal boron nitride (HBN), wurtzite boron nitride (WBN), and cubic boron nitride (CBN). At normal pressure, HBN is the stable phase, while WBN and CBN are stable only under high pressure and are metastable at normal pressure. HBN can transform into WBN and CBN under high temperature and high pressure conditions.

 

Hexagonal boron nitride powder is a loose, lubricating, white powder that is easily absorbent, non-toxic, odorless, non-volatile, and non-flammable. It has a true density of 2.27 g/cm³, a Mohs hardness of 2, and lower mechanical strength compared to other materials, although it is stronger than graphite. HBN exhibits excellent electrical insulation, thermal conductivity, and chemical corrosion resistance. It also possesses strong oxidation resistance, maintaining good lubricating properties at high temperatures, making it an excellent solid lubricant for high-temperature applications.
