Tantalum nitride has a relative density of 13.4 and a melting point of 3090°C. It has a microhardness of 1100kg/m2, a thermal conductivity of 9.54W/(m·K), and a resistivity of 128μΩ·cm. Tantalum nitride is insoluble in water or acid, but slightly soluble in aqua regia, and soluble in potassium hydroxide and decomposes to release ammonia. When heated to 2000°C, tantalum nitride releases nitrogen.
